Three places in the Holy Land

Jerusalem and Bethlehem share a ridge of hills and a history that does not fit in one tradition. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre holds Calvary and the tomb under one roof. A few miles south, a low door leads to the grotto of the Nativity. Across the Kidron, the garden of Gethsemane keeps the night of watching.

These three are close on a map and far in the kind of quiet they ask of a guest. One is crowded and lamp-lit; one is cool and underground; one is open to the wind in the olives.

A pilgrim of Palomeya can walk all three on a single journey and leave the same names at each. Palomeya does not represent the communities that keep these doors. It only sends someone who will enter, remain, and come out again.

If you ask for the Holy Land package, you are asking for three visits, not one church. The roads are short. The standing is three times.
