Mexico City
Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe

On Tepeyac the tilma of Juan Diego still hangs above the altar, and the new basilica gathers a river of people before dawn. Roses, songs, and the long history of Mexico meet in one image. The old church remains on the hill; the new one holds the cloak in a wide, low light.
A pilgrim of Palomeya enters with a folded paper of names and stays for Holy Mass beneath the tilma. Palomeya does not represent the basilica. A person goes to Tepeyac, offers the prayer, and leaves the city as quietly as they arrived.
